Collection includes many portraits of family and friends both in Norway and North Dakota, especially the Aslakson family. Other names noted are Hendrickson, Houkom, Lee, and Halvorson. These are contained in three card photograph albums and also individual card photographs and cartes de visite. The subject files include images of the Olsness farm at Sheyenne, N.D., scenes and staff of the North Dakota Insurance Department. There are two photographs of women homesteaders by their homestead 'shacks.' There are also various portraits of Mr. Olsness, and portraits of state officials including Gov. Lynn Frazier, Joseph Kitchen, F.E. Tunell, Martin S. Hagen, O.H. Olson, A.T. Russell and Harold Hopton. Of note is a Nonpartisan League group photograph, a mock wedding, and government officials at lunch with Gov. Frazier.

Born at Vinje, Telemark, Norway, immigrated to Sheyenne, N.D. First employed by the railroad and as a farm laborer. Served as secretary for Greenfield Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Co. from 1893-1916. Appointed as a clerk to the 1897 legislature, he became involved in politics. In 1916, he ran for Insurance Commissioner of North Dakota; held the office until his 1934 defeat by William Langer supporters. Also helped organize the Nonpartisan League.
